Q: The Price/Cost of Reborn/Collectible Art Dolls
Why are reborn dolls so expensive? What are the costs associated with them?
A: The price of reborn dolls varies tremendously from artist to artist. However, reborns are expensive because they are collectible dolls. The price of the collectible doll depends on the specific look, level of detail, and quality the buyer is looking for. Similar to the age old saying, “You get what you pay for…” For a good quality realistic collectible doll buyers will have to spend money. Buyers can purchase dolls for cheaper prices; unfortunately good quality and the appearance of realism are compromised. Please see below for a list of factors to include tools and supplies that are needed to create reborn/newborn dolls.
Doll Moldt: $80-$450. There are practically hundreds of doll kits available for artists to choose from, and the costs of these kits vary based on the size of the kit, the popularity of the kit sculpt, the edition of the kit (limited edition/open edition), and the costs of shipping the kit to the artist.
Body: $50. There are a few types of bodies available on the market; a quality doe suede specific to the size of your doll kit is best for your collectible. Some sculptors sell bodies with their doll kits but most others leave it to the artist to find a doll body.
Paint/Assembly Supplies: This includes paint brushes, sponges, glue, felt, toothpicks, etc. These materials vary in price. Although these materials are not frequently purchased adequate nursery supplies can be quite expensive ones. For example the heat set paints used to create dolls can be as much as $40, not to mention, a diverse array of colors are needed for creating a realistic appearance of the dolls. Double Take Doll Nursery uses high quality paint, brushes, and sponges.
Weighting Materials: $15 - $35. Multiple types of weighting materials are needed to give these art dolls a realistic feel and weight. Double Take Doll Nursery prefers to use a combination of Glass Beads, Poly Pellets, and Polyfil. This gives our dolls weight and a cuddly feel.
Eyes: $8-$15. There are many types of eyes available on the market to include eyes that are made of plastic, glass and other materials. The price of these eyes usually depends on the color, size, and effect desired.
Mohair: $10-$100. There are many types and qualities of mohair available on the market. The cost of this hair varies based on the quality of it to include how well the hair is cleaned and combed, the length of the hair, the colors that are used to dye the hair, and the type of dye used.
Rooting Needles and Tools: Similar to paint and assembly supplies, rooting needles, rooting tools and hair care items to include scissors, razor combs, and hair misters vary in price. Although these materials are not frequently purchased adequate nursery supplies can be quite expensive ones. A package of rooting needles alone is approximately $35. These tools are not purchased for each doll but they are purchased for approximately every 3-7 dolls as needed.
Eyelashes: $4-$14. Eyelashes are needed for both open and closed eye babies as we do not individually root our doll eyelashes.
Clothing/Accessories: $25-Unlimited: Double Take Doll Nursery offers clothing and accessories in many of our doll packages to include diapers, socks, shoes, hats/bonnets, onesies, layettes, blankets, bottles, toys, rattles, diaper bags, and grooming kit. Additionally, many buyers want to purchase designer clothing for their reborns. Customers have the option to customize any clothing and accessories for each doll purchased; if no custom options have been provided clothing and accessories will be chosen at the discretion of Double Take Doll Nursery artists.
Hopefully this helps you to understand the price and costs of our lovely dolls. For further information or specific questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us here at Double Take Doll Nursery via our Contact Page.
